An ex-fashion model of the top class, almost 5'10'' in height, Carey was popular with high-end American designers, including Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren. Her father was an eminent geoscientist and was awarded the title of Scientist of 1979 by the Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists. Carey has traveled across the globe due to his profession. While she attended in the University of Colorado, Carey began to model on the side. The Ford model agency in New York noticed her and asked for help. In 1980, she moved to France for a brief period of time, and lived in Paris as well as Bordeaux and then returned in New York in order to explore the modeling profession. She appeared on Vogue and Glamour pages. Between her modelling assignments, she studied literature full time during her time at New York University. When she arrived in New York she began to pursue acting. In 1986, she made her debut on stage with a small character as a minor character in "Club Paradise" in the film "Club Paradise" with Robin Williams.
