Adkins was born to a single mother of just a few years and was raised in various working-class London neighbourhoods. She was a lover of popular music of the present as a child and was able to play the clarinet and guitar. She came across Etta who was a mid-century Rhythm-and blues singer, in her teens, and started to pursue a career a musician. She was attending a secondary school for the visual and performing arts that was funded by the government. A friend of mine posted songs Adkins had written on Myspace. Her music eventually attracted the attention of record companies and, in 2006, shortly after her graduation the school, she signed a contract with XL Recordings.
